According to preliminary data, 52 people died in an accident at the Listvyazhnaya mine in the Kemerovo region, including six mine rescuers, RIA Novosti reported in emergency services.
Investigators detained the 47-year-old director of the mine, his 59-year-old first deputy and 36-year-old head of the site, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation said.
As explained by the Deputy Prosecutor General of Russia Dmitry Demeshin, the cause of the accident was a methane explosion caused by a spark and the subsequent dynamic blow, which injured the miners.
On Thursday, at about 08:30 (04:30 Moscow time), smoke occurred at the plant located in Belovo. At the time of the emergency, there were 285 people in the mine.
The Governor of the Kemerovo Region Sergei Tsivilev, who headed the headquarters for the elimination of the consequences of the accident, announced a three-day mourning in the region. All entertainment events in the region will be canceled from November 26 to 28.
Tsivilev expressed condolences to the families of the victims and injured and promised to provide them with comprehensive assistance.
