According to the President of Turkey, Putin demonstrates the desire to end the conflict as soon as possible. Erdogan said he thinks “an important step forward will be taken” as the military operations are now “rather problematic”
Russia and Ukraine agreed to exchange 200 prisoners. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this in an interview with PBS, talking about his recent meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Uzbekistan.
“He really shows me that he wants to end this (the conflict in Ukraine. — RBC) as soon as possible. This is my impression, because now everything is going quite problematic. 200 prisoners will be exchanged according to the agreement reached by the parties. I think an important step forward will be taken, — said the Turkish leader. He did not specify whether the exchange had already taken place and, if not, when it would take place, and did not provide other details.
RBC sent a request to the press service of the Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia.
Moscow last reported on the exchange of prisoners with Kyiv at the end of June. Then both sides of the conflict confirmed that they exchanged military personnel in the format “144 for 144”. The total number of Ukrainian soldiers in captivity of the Russian Ministry of Defense at that time was estimated at more than 6 thousand.
On August 3, Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said that Russia and Ukraine had already exchanged prisoners and bodies of dead servicemen 27 times. He did not name the number of prisoners exchanged.
On September 2, the Ukrainian coordination headquarters reported that Kyiv had returned 14 military men from Russian captivity. According to him, the exchange took place in the Donetsk region, within the boundaries of which Moscow recognized the DPR. The Russian side did not confirm this information.
