Pope: Orban announced Russia's plans to end the special operation in Ukraine by May 9 Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that the Russian military would not artificially adjust their actions to Victory Day
Pope Francis told the Corriere della Sera newspaper that Hungarian President Viktor Orban told him that Russia plans to complete a special military operation in Ukraine by May 9.
“Orban, when I met him, told me that the Russians have a plan that everything will end on May 9th. I hope so, — said the pontiff. He called himself a pessimist, but emphasized that everything possible must be done to end hostilities.
On May 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Russian military would not artificially tailor its actions to a specific date, including May 9 Victory Day. According to him, the pace of the special operation in Ukraine depends “on the need to minimize any risks for the civilian population and Russian military personnel.”
Prior to this, Lavrov said that the condition for ending hostilities in Ukraine is the achievement of the set goals.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation in Ukraine. He called its goals the denazification, demilitarization of the country and the protection of the inhabitants of Donbass from genocide.

In late March, the head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff, Sergei Rudskoy, reported that Russian troops occupied more than 90% of the territory of the LPR and almost half of the DPR , and also established control over the Kherson region and most of the Zaporozhye region.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu noted a significant decrease in the combat potential of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and therefore, according to him, now there is an opportunity to focus on achieving the main goal— liberation of Donbass.
Nevertheless, on April 22, Major General Rustam Minnekaev, deputy commander of the Central Military District for military-political work, announced that during the second phase of the special operation, the Russian military was going to take control of southern Ukraine. Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on issues related to the special operation.
