The expert explained the manic stubbornness of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the shelling of the bridge in the Kherson region

“This is a PR campaign, it will not affect the supply of the Russian group”

Ukraine continues active shelling of the Antonovsky bridge across the Dnieper in the Kherson region. On Wednesday night, the bridge received new damage. It is now closed to traffic. According to the head of the region Kirill Stremousov on his Telegram channel, engineering work is currently underway there. According to reports from the field, several dozen cars have now accumulated near Antonovsky Bridge, which are sent on a detour for 80 kilometers – to Novaya Kakhovka.

Why is the Antonovsky Bridge so important for the Armed Forces of Ukraine that they have been conducting large-scale shelling on it for several days? After the attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kherson region, the Darevsky bridge is also being restored. Why don't Russian troops respond by hitting bridges in Kyiv or Western Ukraine? About this “MK” said military expert captain 1st rank in the reserve Vladimir Gundarov.

The topic of bridges in the Kherson region has not left the tops of the news for the past few days. In particular, political scientist Dmitry Evstafiev notes in his Telegram channel that the forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have long been concentrating their long-range resources on attacks on the Antonovsky bridge in the Kherson region, but “they began to systematically penetrate only after receiving the Haimars”; – American high-precision multiple launch rocket systems HIMARS. And even after that, notes Evstafiev, the Antonovsky Bridge, although damaged, is “not critical.” “Repairable. This is me to how easy it is to destroy bridges. It’s easy in a telegram, in practice it’s a whole military operation of a medium scale,” he noted.

However, Evstafiev believes that this does not mean at all that Russian troops should continue to refrain from strikes on bridges in Kyiv-controlled territories in the future. On the contrary, he believes, it is time to start doing this, especially in Western Ukraine.

Here is what military expert Vladimir Gundarov says about this:

– Yes, indeed, several holes were added on the Antonovsky bridge tonight. Now, of course, it is impossible to move along it not only with heavy, but also with light vehicles, you can fall into these holes. But at the same time, it cannot be said that the bridge was destroyed, since the supports themselves and the supporting structure were not damaged. Only the roadbed of the bridge was damaged.

– Yes, but the damage to the Antonovsky bridge is not of decisive importance for this. Strikes on the bridge — More like a publicity stunt. In Kyiv, they are now declaring with enthusiasm, they say, the bridge has been destroyed, the Russian group is cut off from supplies, and now we will go to advance on Kherson and liberate it.

– In fact, our group is absolutely not cut off from anything. For example, upstream, you can easily set up a pontoon crossing. Moreover, if the bridge is 1400 meters long, then upstream the Dnieper is narrower, from coast to coast – only 450 meters. Building a pontoon bridge there will not be difficult at all.

– Quickly. Cars drive up, throw off the pontoons, they unfold, the whole structure is connected and the bridge is almost ready. The score goes for tens of minutes.

But there, even such a crossing is not necessary to build, because in addition to the Antonovsky bridge with the opposite bank, there are other ways of communication. For example, there is the possibility of car traffic along the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station – there is a road on top of the dam.

– If you try, you can destroy anything. Only this will require a huge amount of ammunition, which the Armed Forces of Ukraine now do not have as much as they would like.

In addition, a little further upstream, not far from Kherson, between the Kakhovka dam and the Antonovsky bridge there is also a railway bridge. The railway from the Crimea to Kherson just goes to it. This route is very convenient for supplying our troops with trains.

– I'm telling you: this is largely a PR campaign. In addition, before the announced referendum on the entry of the Kherson region into Russia, it is important to irritate local residents. After all, the impossibility of moving along this bridge creates great inconvenience for them. Most of the Kherson region is located on the left bank, and Kherson itself is on the right. Of course, disruption of communications between them – is a big problem.

– First of all, the bridge is really a very difficult goal. It is easy to damage it, but it is difficult to destroy it. To do this, you need to get directly into the bearing supports of the bridge structure. And secondly, why do we need to destroy them?

– Well, okay. Let's say we didn't just strike, but directly destroyed the Paton Bridge in the center of Kyiv. What will it give us? Absolutely nothing. In the same Kyiv, there are also five or six bridges. That is, in terms of supplying the Donbass grouping of Ukrainian troops, we will not achieve anything. This will have exactly the same PR value that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to achieve by hammering on the Antonovsky Bridge. I don't think we should follow the same path.

Yes. This is on the one hand. On the other hand,  even if these bridges are destroyed, there will still be ten bridges across the Dnieper in Ukraine. What's the point of destroying them all? A lot of effort, a whole military operation, a huge amount of ammunition… And all this for the sake of such a great defeat? I don't think it's all about us. And most importantly, we ourselves will need these bridges soon.
